What Is Super Golf?
What is this new golf league, who’s behind it, and what does it mean for the PGA?
The golf world is abuzz with the news of a new super golf league backed by Saudi investment, and led by golf great Greg Norman (who would also be the commissioner of this new league). But what is this league that is being proposed, and how is it different than the PGA and European tours?
How is Super Golf Different?
Aside from the dollar amounts being presented to players, what will make this league different than the existing tours is of great interest to players and fans alike. The key difference is the introduction of team elements into the weekly tournament structure. Unlike regular PGA tour events that are comprised of 72 hole head to head competitions between players, the Super League is proposing team elements in each event, much like what you would see at the Ryder Cup or events like the Zurich classic. Not much as been said about the specific formats, or if the formats would be consistent week to week, but it is an intriguing possibility that has players excited.
Dustin Johnson was quoted by Golf Digest saying, “I think it’s a really good concept, I think it makes it a little more interesting for the fans and for the players. Yeah, I like the concept.”
Veterans Tommy Fleetwood and Lee Westwood also had good things to say about a change in format, arguing that this could increase the appeal and reach of golf, and make it far more interesting for fans week to week.
Who Could Play in the Super Golf League?
Reports of players including, DJ, Ian Poulter, Phil Michelson, and Bryson DeChambeau receiving offers and signing NDAs from the league have only fueled the flames. While Ian Poulter was reportedly offered $22 million, Bryson was said to have been offered $135 million. For reference, Tiger’s entire PGA career winnings totals to $121 million. These are truly staggering amounts of money being offered here, which goes to show how strongly the investors and Greg Norman feel about this opportunity.
