Today is a sad day for the golf world, and in particular the golfing community in Michigan. Around 10am ET this morning smoke could be seen billowing from the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, MI. By noon, it was clear that the grand clubhouse was a loss, and with it much if not all of the memorabilia displayed inside. Thankfully, no one was injured in the blaze

The historic clubhouse, which counted greats from Arnold Palmer to Tiger Woods as past guests, was completed in 1922. Oakland Hills CC is one of the 14 founding clubs of the Golf Association of Michigan, and in the past has hosted six U.S. Opens, three Pga Championships, and the Ryder Cup.

Recent renovations of the South Course included specific changes and removal of trees so that golfers would be able to view the clubhouse from almost any point on the course.

As a private club, which requires a significant financial investment to join, Oakland Hills is not open for public tees times, but has long been regarded as a bucket list course for golfers across the state of Michigan and beyond. It is unclear when the courses will be open again; as members and staff grapple with the extensive damage.
